What Is Bulletproof Coffee?

The term bulletproof coffee was coined by a man named David Asprey after traveling and seeing the benefits of the Tibetan custom of adding yak butter to tea. After researching, Asprey felt similar benefits could be gained by adding high quality grass fed butter and MCT (medium chain triglycerides) oil to coffee. As word of the benefits spread, the trend gained popularity among paleo diet followers and beyond.

What Are the Benefits?

Bulletproof coffee is hailed for having multiple benefits. Enthusiasts claim it gives tremendous energy levels that can last throughout the morning. Research shows that that MCTs can play a role in weight loss and/or maintenance of healthy weight levels. Additionally, the high fat levels contained in bulletproof coffee can lead to increased levels of satiety, which can aid in reduced caloric intake the rest of the day. Other frequently reported benefits include improved cognitive function, healthy immune system support, and better nutrient absorption (the body requires fat to adequately utilize certain nutrients).

Are There Any Drawbacks?

The purported benefits of bulletproof coffee can make it sound like a wonder drink that we shouldn’t go another day without drinking. But like so many things, it is important to look at the full picture. The biggest criticism of bulletproof coffee is the high levels of saturated fat it contains. While research is debunking much of the vilification of saturated fats, it should still be consumed in moderation. Depending on how much oil and butter is added to bulletproof coffee, you could meet or exceed the recommended limits before breakfast is over. Secondly, consuming bulletproof coffee needs to be considered with regard to the rest of the diet. Generally speaking, it is best consumed as part of a low carbohydrate, clean eating diet. While these warnings are not red flags signifying that no one should have it, they are factors to consider in determining if it is right for you.

How Do I Try Bulletproof Coffee?

If bulletproof coffee sounds like something you would like to try it is pretty simple to try. Start with 2 tablespoons of unsalted, grass fed butter or ghee. Add 1-2 tablespoons of MCT oil or coconut oil. Pour approximately 16 ounces of hot coffee over MCT and butter. Blend with immersion blender till frothy. The end result should be similar to a latte.
